Improve the Male Libido

3 April 2014 3 comments

One reader, in response to my post last week, thought I was suggesting the easiest way for a man to improve his libido was to get a new younger girlfriend. Whilst this may in fact increase a man's sexual desire in some instances I certainly wasn't advocating he take this course of action.

Improved LibidoImproved Libido

So, if a man believes his libido has diminished over time what should he do about it?

  1. Get some blood tests done.
Unfortunately most men are hopeless when it comes to visiting a doctor, however, this is generally the first thing they should do if they're concerned that their libido is low. Their doctor will give them forms to get blood tests done. These test results should then be discussed with their doctor or a specialist.Testosterone is often referred to as the desire hormone. Low levels are usually associated with low libidos (in men and women). A doctor will analyse a man's testosterone and other hormone levels to see if they are within the accepted normal ranges for their age. Men shouldn't panic if their testosterone levels are abnormally low as this can be treated with medication and/or lifestyle changes. There are many ways of administering synthetic testosterone to treat low testosterone levels including pills, injections, creams, gels, nasal sprays and patches. Many doctors have no ethical problems in prescribing these medications for men with low testosterone levels.
  2. Check blood pressure and weight.
A doctor will also check a man's blood pressure and weight to make sure both are within the accepted normal ranges. High blood pressure can be the cause of low libido. Similarly obesity can also be a cause. Obesity and high blood pressure are often interrelated. Controlling obesity can lead to lower blood pressure. Whilst doctors can prescribe medication to lower blood pressure it's often suggested that lifestyle changes need to be implemented to treat the problem.Smoking increases blood pressure. If you're a smoker then think about what it's doing to your sex drive next time you light up.
  3. Hit the gym or do some physical exercise!
The best form of physical exercise to naturally boost testosterone levels, and long term libido, is vigorous strength and resistance training. No other type of treatment has such an impressive impact upon sexual drive and performance!Strength and resistance training breaks down muscles and the rebuilding process helps spike testosterone levels during training and for many hours afterwards. Could this be why men often come home from the gym with a look of lust in their eyes?Regular physical exercise has other benefits like helping to control stress. Less stress equals lower levels of the hormone cortisol. Whilst cortisol is essential for everyday body functions if elevated levels are sustained for too long then this can tear your body down quickly. Note that elevated levels of cortisol decrease testosterone levels leading to low libido. Sustained high levels of cortisol destroy healthy muscle and bone, slow down healing and cell generation, impairs digestion and metabolism function, weakens your immune system, causes hair loss AND can cause penis shrinkage! I'm sure most men will nearly fall out of their chair when reading this as no one wants a shrinking penis. Apart from the obvious issue surely a shrinking penis is counterproductive to trying to improve one's libido! I think men at this point will be reaching for their calenders to work out when they can next head to Bali.Remember physical exercise is great for maintaining a healthy body, mind and libido but overtraining can increase cortisol levels to the point that you're going backwards!Strength and resistance training are complimentary to a good sex life for reasons beyond boosting testosterone and libido in both men and women: They increase performance, flexibility, endurance and decrease blood pressure. And they help control body weight. By controlling body weight this helps with self esteem and creating a positive body image. Much better moods, increased energy levels, looking and feeling younger are other tangible benefits associated with strength and resistance training that help improve one's sex drive.
  4. Get your diet right.
Healthy eating is the cornerstone of maintaining a healthy body, mind and sex drive. No amount of physical exercise can really negate the ill effects of a bad diet. Because of the correlation between libido and testosterone it's important to consider what foods can assist in testosterone production. Some doctors suggest that increased protein consumption can assist with the production of testosterone. Note that protein also assists the body with repairing itself, which if you're doing strenuous exercise is vital.Scientific studies have proven that zinc and magnesium play vital roles in increasing testosterone levels. There are many foods that have zinc and/or magnesium in them including raw oysters, eggs, red meat, chicken and pork, fish, spinach and other green leafy vegetables, mushrooms, nuts and seeds, beans and lentils, some whole grains, low fat dairy products, avocados and bananas.Chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, contains both zinc and magnesium. A fat free way to get this into your diet is add cocoa powder to smoothies and protein shakes. Chocolate also contains theobromine, an alkaloid that has a very similar effect to caffeine. It also contains phenylethylamine, a ‘feel good and anti depressant' chemical believed to produce the feeling of ‘being in love'. So, when your partner talks about how good chocolate makes her feel, there is some science behind it. In addition, dark chocolate has a massive amount of anti-oxidants, which are great for the body in general, as they help maintain the immune system.Foods rich in anti-oxidants (blueberries, coffee, green tea, walnuts etc) should be included in your everyday diet.
  5. Try morning sex.
A man's testosterone levels naturally peak in the early morning hours, so if you and your partner aren't happy with the sex you've been having then try morning sex. Some people swear by it especially on hump days (Wednesday)! Make sure you leave enough time before work to enjoy yourselves, though, since thoughts of being late to work could dampen the mood and impede orgasm for either or both of you.
  6. Review your medications.
Research, or discuss with your doctor, any medications that you're taking or considering taking, as some medications can lower a man's testosterone levels. Proscar for instance is a prescription drug used to treat male pattern baldness. One of the negative side effects of the drug is that it decreases a man's testosterone levels. For most men I think it's an easy choice – hair or erections.
  7. Ensure you're getting plenty of sleep and relaxation time.
Continued lack of sleep has a seriously deleterious effect on one's general health and in turn one's libido. If you're having problems sleeping then you may need professional help.Relaxation helps control stress levels ensuring cortisol levels don't remain elevated and testosterone levels aren't suppressed. When doing a stress test sleeping isn't considered relaxation. Make time for plenty of relaxation!
  8. Get your relationship on track.
As a friend of mine realised last year it was his relationship issues with his wife that diminished his sexual desire. Unfortunately the issues went unresolved resulting in an unhealthy sex life and eventually the marriage breaking down. If you have issues in your relationship then you need to try and discuss them with your partner and hopefully resolve them. Failing that you might want to consider a counselor. It's a common issue for many couples who're in long term relationships to lack lust for their partner. This is sometimes mistaken for lack of general libido when it's really not. Couples often need to reconnect and get their sex life back to where they're happy with it. Whilst it can be no easy feat there are things couples can do to spice up their sex life. Buying lingerie for her, sex toys for both her and him, role playing and fantasy costumes, making time for date nights and also for sex, living out fantasies, watching erotic films, changing routine, considering new sexual positions, should all be considered in order to reignite the passion.Couples also need to get the mood right in the bedroom – no pets, no laptops or mobile phones in the bedroom. Consider lighting candles, air temp, music etc. Sensual massage can increase excitement levels. If your sex life isn't what it used to be and you're not happy with it then it's essential that you're patient when trying to improve it. Firstly you need to work out whether your libido is low or is simply the fact that you can't be bothered to have sex with your current partner. Get blood tests done and analysed, consider your lifestyle and makes changes where needed and take a good look at your current relationship. Today's the day you should start being proactive rather than lamenting about it tomorrow!
So that's my suggestions on how to improve a man's libido. It can be quite complex until you break it down into the various areas. I'd love to hear your feedback if you have any.

I'm doing some research on the female libido and encourage you to let me know what affects it and how it can be improved. There are many men who'd like to solve this riddle.

Delivering passion and pleasure.

Some food for thought in what you have written. For me personally I find as a woman who gyms regularly, it raises the bar on my wants and needs when it comes to sex. Nothing like getting hot and sweaty, to get hot and sweaty! ;) Morning sex is good, but afternoon is better, especially when you can drag hubby to the shed away from the kids for something quick hot and heavy.

And don't forget herbs... naturopathic blend in Sexy Tea (Damiana, saw palmetto, ginseng, Verbeena, passionflower) can assist. https://www.facebook.com/Li...

Great blog! I think depression can be a huge factor for guys and something they struggle to talk about. Having a chat to a professional can do wonders.
